Netflix have excelled once again with their new original series ‘Say I Do’. The show helps unmarried couples, like Essie and Bruce, experience an unforgettable wedding which only one of them knows about! UK viewers may see it as being similar to Don’t Tell the Bride (but without the disasters!)

Episode 7 ‘A Cinderella Wedding’ featured farmer Bruce and his partner Essie who have definitely been through their fair share of struggles in the relationship. Bruce wanted to finally give Essie the wedding she deserved and he did not disappoint.

Essie and Bruce definitely had the fairy tail wedding, but did this story have the happy ending they deserved? What are the couple up to now? Are they still together?

Who are Essie and Bruce?

Essie and Bruce first met on a dating app and said it was love at first sight. However their relationship has not come without struggle. Three years ago, Bruce had a farming accident shattering his leg and leaving him bedridden, which changed the course of their relationship as he learnt to walk again. Bruce couldn’t do much for himself and Essie never left his side, helping him through it all.

The pair were then surprised with their beautiful daughter Vera, and Essie stepped up once again. Bruce told the camera crew that Essie does so much for other people but never puts herself first, which is why he wanted to surprise her with the wedding she deserved. He said it would make him ‘the happiest man in the world.’

Essie has also been through a lot of personal struggle in her life. She spent her early years moving foster homes before being adopted. She was then told she learning disability but was never told what it was. However, she finally got the diagnosis she so desperately needed on the show when she visited a cognitive therapist with host Jeremiah Brent. Essie was finally diagnosed with dyslexia.

The hardships the couples overcome is what makes the beauty of the show. No Say I Do couple is a stranger to misfortune, with Marcus and Tiffany from Episode 1 having a disastrous first wedding!

Say I Do: Bruce and Essie’s wedding journey

Although Essie and Bruce had been together a while, Bruce did not want to get married until he could walk down the aisle without an aid. At the time of filming he had greatly recovered from his injury, he thought it was the perfect time to surprise Essie. Bruce proposed to Essie by playing a song he had written for her, which went hand in hand with a perfect rustic barn wedding.

The wedding really was ‘A Cinderella Wedding’ with Essie’s stunning custom made dress and shoes designed by the shows designer himself, Thai Nguyen.

However, the most heart warming part of the wedding was when Essie wrote and read her own vows just days after being diagnosed with dyslexia. There was not a dry eye in the house, especially from Bruce and host Jeremiah!

Where are Essie and Bruce now?

We know the couple finally got the fairy tale wedding they deserved but was the ending as magical?

Of course it was! Fans will be happy to know that Essie and Bruce are still together, (but we didn’t doubt that).

We found Essie’s Instagram page, and the pair are just as happy (if not happier) as they were before marriage.

Essie also uses her platform to raise awareness for people who also suffer from dyslexia.

Essie’s best friend, Savannah who featured on the show has set up a Zola Registry page for the couple (without them knowing), to help Essie and Bruce furnish their new home in Indiana.

Say I Do has not yet been confirmed for Series 2 but we’re keeping our fingers crossed!
